Tonight we had the opportunity to chat with Dr. Iain Hunter about his research as a professor of biomechanics at Brigham Young University. He has been studying the mechanics of running related to performance since 1997. Not only does he work at BYU but he also works with USA Track and Field as their lead biomechanics expert for the steeplechase. His running experience started at a young age when he started racing the 800m, which he eventually raced for BYU. He has now extended his range of racing to the marathon. His first marathon was in 2007. In his second marathon in 2009 he aimed for a top 3 finish, instead he became the oldest winner ever of the St George Marathon with a time of 2:21.03. His other accomplishments in the St George Marathon include setting age group records 4 times.Running is in the Hunter family blood, they are all runners with two of them currently competing for BYU.
What impressed me during the seminar was the depth of knowledge Dr. Hunter has, and it is apparent that he is a leading mind in the field of biomechanics. Somebody once told me, "the more you know about a subject, the easier it is to teach it simply", I saw this with Iain. If you have ever had a question about how your stride length, footstrike, or upper body mechanics can affect your performance, watch the video to get Dr. Iain Hunter's research backed answers.
